Each visitor staying overnight in a Buncombe County occupancy tax collecting property pays a total of four percent in hotel room tax. When that’s added to the seven percent sales tax, visitors are paying a total of 11 percent on their overnight accommodations. Under the legislation, Buncombe County Finance collects the room tax from lodging facilities with five or more rooms on behalf of the BCTDA who then use the revenues to promote the destination out-of-market.
